Trump says Ellison didn’t stand a chance

St. Paul, MN – President Donald Trump took to Twitter early Sunday morning to voice his opinion on the race for DNC Chair, calling it rigged against Rep. Keith Ellison (D – MN).

“The race for DNC chair was, of course, totally ‘rigged,’” Trump tweeted. “Bernie’s guy, like Bernie himself, never had a chance. Clinton demanded Perez!”

Ellison, endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I – VT) early in the race, lost to former Labor Department secretary Tom Perez with a 235-200 vote.

Perez was considered the candidate of the establishment wing of the party, with ties to the Obama administration and Hillary Clinton. In the 2016 presidential race, Perez was rumored to be on a short list of Vice President candidates for Clinton. Clinton never formally endorsed Perez for DNC Chair.

Perez commented on Trump’s tweet on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday morning saying he and Ellison “got a good kick out of that.”

“Our unity as a party is our greatest strength, and it is his worst nightmare,” Perez said.
