Both Congresswoman Ilhan Omar from Minnesota and her Republican challenger, Lacy Johnson, received endorsements from prominent elected officials.
President Donald Trump publicly endorsed Johnson, Monday, tweeting his support for the long time Minnesota resident turned congressional candidate.
“I’m Endorsing you also Lacy, you truly deserve it. You are doing a great job, and Omar is a disaster who wants much higher taxes, hates our Military & our Vets, demands Open Borders, and is fighting to take away our great 2nd Amendment. Good luck Lacy!” the President said.

Johnson responded, saying in a press release that he’s “honored and humbled to have President Trump’s endorsement.”
“While Ilhan Omar has done nothing to improve the lives of the people in the Fifth District, President Trump is working hard to keep our nation safe and get our people back to work. I look forward to working with the President to get our economy back on track and improve the lives of the people of the Fifth District,” he added.
Johnson describes himself as a fervent supporter of the president on his campaign website where he also promises to improve public schools, bolster the economy, stand with Israel, stop illegal immigration, and defend the Constitution.
Meanwhile, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has come out in support of Omar, endorsing her “as a leader who is disrupting conventional wisdom” in a recent op-ed with the Star Tribune. Ellison was forthright with the fact that his supportive article is in direct response to a different piece that ran with the Tribune in which a Minnesota Black Lives Matter leader accused the congresswoman of neglecting her constituents.
Ellison cites Omar’s support for a $15 minimum wage, an abolition of rent and mortgage costs amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, and her generally progressive social and economic attitudes as a reason why residents of District 5 should vote for her again.
Neither Ellison or Omar are scandal free figures in Minnesota politics. The congresswoman recently married her chief fundraiser and has since put her campaign on track to give his consulting firm over $1,000,000 through donations from her campaign this year. Ellison has long battled allegations that he beat a woman he used to date in 2016.
Karen Monahan, his accuser, has since posted medical documentation that she claims as proof of Ellison’s abusive past.
