Kendall Qualls, a Republican candidate for US House, has released propositions to reform, retrain, and support police officers in response to George Floyd’s death.

Qualls, an army veteran, African American, and candidate to represent MN’s 3rd district said that Floyd’s death has illuminated a “… jarring deficiency in police strategy, training, and monitoring.” He released an 8-point plan for police reform. The plan includes strengthening bonds between police and their communities, creating early warning programs for problematic officers, and banning neck restraints.

“… I know what it feels like to go to bed with sirens and violence outside my apartment window. The one thing I needed, like all children, was safety and security. Police officers are there to provide the safety and security for those who cannot defend themselves, and their property, from harm. We must give police the training and tools they need to provide safe and secure communities,” said Qualls.

Quall’s points call for tightening definitions of practices to increase the accountability of officers. Other measures include monitoring problem officers, creating special prosecution units for police misconduct, and better training of law enforcement.

“Simply put, I want to live in a world where I don’t fear for my sons’ safety because of the color of their skin,” stated Qualls, “At the same time, it is imperative that we give police officers the support and training they need.”
