On Feb. 15, Representative ilhan Omar (D- MN) tweeted “Our next President should declare a #NationalEmergency on day 1 to address the existential threat to all life on the planet posed by Climate Change.”

The effects of conducting an actual national emergency for climate change would be disastrous. Oil drilling would be put on pause and restrictions would be placed on gas-powered vehicles, hurting the middle class most predominantly. This would also hurt the lower class as they are the highest consumers of public transportation and these restrictions would also increase that cost.
Other Representatives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D- NY) have stated that the world will end in 12 years if climate change isn’t addressed. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez has also advocated for activists to “breathe fire” when it comes to the Trump administration.
A national emergency on climate change isn’t the only thing on Rep. Omar’s mind. In another Feb. 15 tweet, she calls healthcare and travel bans national emergencies, but fixing illegal immigration with a border wall is not grounds for declaring a national emergency.
Climate change is a national emergency.
28 million Americans without health insurance is a national emergency.
Children in cages is a national emergency.
A ban on 135 million people is a national emergency.
Trump’s wall is NOT a national emergency.
