The House Democrat caucus meeting came just before President Trump’s meeting with Minority leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Pelosi on infrastructure and before he gave his remarks on the Mueller investigation in the White House Rose Garden later that day.
Speaker Pelosi accused President Trump of engaging in a cover up shortly before their Infrastructure meeting to which President Trump responded to in his remarks on the Mueller Investigation later that day saying, “instead of walking in happily into a meeting, I walk in to look at people that had just said that I was doing a cover-up. I don’t do cover-ups.”
“The president is making it awfully difficult for us to do our job” Phillips said on CNN, adding that President Trump engages in a “willful lack of leadership.”
Later, Tapper asked Phillips if he thinks President Trump is daring House Democrats to impeach him, to which Phillips responded by saying “It’s appearing increasingly evident that he may be doing just that.” He also added that during the caucus meeting, Pelosi’s “message was [that] we have to be methodical, we have to be principled, and again, patience. We have been very patient and that has its limits.”
“Impeachment has some grave consequences and trauma for this country. I think most people would like to avoid that generally, but in this case we’ve got to do our jobs” Phillips added.
Phillips concluded by alluding to the fact that House Democrats will still be pursuing further investigations, saying “Our job is very simple. Our job is to pursue facts and let facts drive decisions”
