Rep. Ilhan Omar faced widespread criticism this week after she appeared to compare the United States and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban.
“We must have the same level of accountability and justice for all victims of crimes against humanity. We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the U.S., Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban,” Omar wrote on Twitter Monday along with a video of her questioning Secretary of State Antony Blinken at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing.
Several Republican lawmakers criticized Omar for denigrating the country that welcomed her as a refugee.
“Ilhan was a refugee from Somalia and America welcomed her. If she really believes America is a hateful country on par with the Taliban and Hamas, she’s welcome to leave,” said Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas.

Nikki Haley, former U.N. ambassador and South Carolina governor, said Omar is “lumping the United States and Israel into the same group as terrorist organizations.”
“Let me be clear: The Taliban and Hamas deliberately kill innocent civilians, the U.S. and Israel protect civilians,” she said.

“A member of Congress on the House Foreign Affairs Committee equates U.S. soldiers with terrorists. She’s an extremist who doesn’t belong in Congress,” added Tennessee congressional candidate Robby Starbuck.

Jerusalem Post columnist Emily Schrader said Omar is unable to “tell the difference between internationally recognized terrorist organizations which murder women for being raped, among other atrocities, and those who fight against terrorist organizations.”

Texas Rep. Ronny Jackson accused Omar of “actively sabotaging the nation that has given her everything.”
Comparing our troops to the Taliban is DISGUSTING! This is one of the MOST un-American things I have EVER read – and it’s coming from a member of Congress nonetheless. Ilhan Omar HATES America, and she’s actively sabotaging the nation that has given her EVERYTHING. https://t.co/jGoGdR6OjV

Omar has been accused of making anti-Semitic comments throughout her career in Congress, including two 2019 incidents in which she suggested that Jews have conflicting loyalties and use their wealth to influence American politics. In response to the latter, 11 Jewish groups called for Omar’s removal from the House Foreign Affairs Committee for her “ugly, anti-Semitic attacks.”
