More Skeletons In Ellison’s Closet: Assault Allegation From 2005 Resurfaces

Over a decade ago, Amy Alexander claimed she was assaulted by Ellison in 2005. Now the allegations have resurfaced, and a newly discovered record of a 911 call supports Alexander's story.

MINNEAPOLIS – Another accusation of domestic violence against Rep. Keith Ellison has come to light, and a 911 report corroborates the woman’s claims.

Over the weekend, Ellison, a candidate for attorney general of Minnesota, was accused of physically and verbally abusing his former partner Karen Monahan. The allegations caused another woman’s story of Ellison’s mistreatment and abuse from 2005 to resurface, and this time with new evidence.

The Wright County Republican published an article in 2006 written by Amy Alexander, a Democratic activist, who allegedly had an on-and-off affair with Ellison. In the article, Alexander says their relationship started in 1993, while Ellison was married to Kim Ellison. Their “hot and cold romance” started to go downhill in 1994, causing Alexander to move out of state.

“Our hot and cold romance devolved into a love/hate showdown by spring of 1994. Keith belittled me about my weight and constantly criticized my every word and action,” Alexander wrote. “He ostracized me from the community on whose behalf I had worked so hard to advocate. Feeling exiled I escaped to New York for the next five years.”

Their relationship was rekindled in 2004, however, Alexander says it quickly fell apart again. In May 2005, Ellison came to Alexander’s house uninvited and assaulted Alexander, leading Alexander to call the police.

“In May, Keith wanted to try and quiet me so he came to my home uninvited,” Alexander wrote. “We had words. His anger kicked in. He berated me. He grabbed me and pushed me out of the way. I was terrified. I called the police. As he fled he broke my screen door. I have never been so scared.”

Ellison denied the accusations at the time, saying he had never been to her house and never assaulted her. However, a newly discovered record of a 911 call gives credence to Alexander’s story.

The 911 report, unearthed by Twitter user Jeff Kolb, indicates a female caller reported she was assaulted by Ellison on May 16, 2005. The caller’s name was redacted, but records show Alexander lived at the address listed in 2005.

A month after the incident, Ellison took out a restraining order against Alexander. In September 2006, over a year later, Alexander filed a petition for her own restraining order after feeling harassed by Ellison’s attorney.

“It was the harassment from Ellison’s attorney that caused my fear to reignite,” Alexander wrote. “Ellison is a man on a quest for power and national prominence; A man with deep ties to some pretty scary people. I feared for my life and for the safety of my daughter.”
