Senate File 754 which currently is authored by four Minnesota Democrats would make it a petty misdemeanor for any restaurant owner who automatically offers a plastic straw to any customer.

John Marty - Author of legislation to ban straws

As of 2019, it is now illegal for restaurants to offer plastic straws to customers in California.  Minnesota Democrats have introduced an identical bill in the Minnesota Senate.

Senate File 754 which currently is authored by four Minnesota Democrats would make it a petty misdemeanor for any restaurant owner who automatically offers a plastic straw to any customer.

Experts have criticized this bill as just “feel good” legislation that will do nothing to help the environment. Replacing plastic straws with paper straws will be a significant burden on restaurants. Paper Straws cost roughly 8 times more to make than plastic straws.

The bill was referred to the committee on Commerce and Consumer Protection Finance and Policy where if this bill gets a hearing the public will be allowed to testify in support and opposition.
