Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar Files for Divorce in the Midst of Affair Allegations

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has filed for divorce from Ahmed Hirsi amidst allegations that she had an affair with a Democrat political strategist.

Omar asserts that she married Hirsi, at the time known as Ahmed Aden, in an Islamic ceremony in 2002 that was not legally officiated.

Omar and Aden broke up after 6 years and 2 kids together. The Minnesotan Congresswoman then went on to marry Ahmed Nur Said Elmi a year later, whom some have alleged to be her brother.

During this period, Omar and Hirsi reconciled in 2012 and had another child together while she was still legally married to Elmi. Omar and Elmi officially divorced in 2017 and then she proceeded to marry Hirsi again in 2018.

The New York Post first reported in August that Tim Mynett, a partner of the E. Street Group of political consultants in D.C., was getting divorced after allegations that he was romantically involved with the Minnesota Congresswoman.

Mynett’s wife – Dr. Beth Jordan Mynett – filed for divorce claiming her spouse confessed to an affair with Omar in April, the same month FEC records show that the Omar’s campaign began paying E. Street Group for “travel expenses.”

The FEC’s documents reveal that Omar’s campaign has paid nearly $230,000 in the last year to the E. Street Group. As per FEC guidelines – an independent regulatory agency whose purpose is to enforce campaign finance law – legislators are prohibited from using campaign funds for personal travel expenses unless the candidate pays the money back with his or her own money.

“If [Congresswoman Omar’s campaign] reimbursed [E. Street Group] for travel so that Representative Omar would have the benefit of Mynett’s romantic companionship, the expenditures must be considered personal in nature,” reports The National Legal and Policy Center. “Rep. Omar’s filings do not reveal subsequent reimbursements for Mynett’s travel.”

Omar’s staff have issued a statement saying, “This has taken a significant toll on Ilhan, Ahmed, and their three children. Just like any other family navigating this kind of transition, Ilhan wishes to have their privacy respected for themselves and their children and will not be commenting any further.”
