Minnesota Democrats Hold Hearing In Hopes To Pass Assisted Suicide

Once the lethal drug has been dispensed, no safeguards exist to prevent pressure, coercion, or abuse. No one is required to witness death.

Assisted Suicide

Republicans, faith groups, and civil rights groups expressed outrage as Minnesota Democrats decide to hold a hearing to discuss passing legislation that would allow doctors to prescribe lethal drugs for the sole purpose of killing the patient.

The bill has broad support from Democrats in the MN Senate and MN House but does not list a single GOP author.

Republican State Senator Michelle Benson spoke out against the legislation saying “If physician-assisted suicide becomes law, it may be easier for some to remind those with a high level of care that it is cheaper for them to die than to keep them alive. The cost of care is not how we determine the value of someone’s life. ”

Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL) also voiced concerns about the Democrat proposal. “Assisted suicide is a danger to all of us,” says MCCL Executive Director Scott Fischbach. “Contrary to the assertions of activists trying to generate public support for this bill, legalizing assisted suicide would pose real risks to Minnesotans.”

Once the lethal drug has been dispensed, no safeguards exist to prevent pressure, coercion, or abuse. No one is required to witness death.

Jeff Vest and Greg Deckert are Twin Cities estate planning and probate attorneys and members of the North Star Law and Policy Center also wrote an editorial in the Star Tribune voicing opposition to assisted suicide championed by Minnesota Democrats.

One of the concerns is that assisted suicide could result in Minnesota becoming a destination for those who want to commit suicide.

“Hypothetically — or in reality, if this bill becomes law — a physician or a non-physician health care provider could set up a practice where Minnesota residents, or people from all over the country, would come to receive their lethal drugs.” they write.
