Minnesota Theatre Company Company Asks Guest To Avert The Gaze Of Heterosexual White Men

"The idea is to suspend the gaze of heterosexual white men, the very artists who named and defined so much of our Western cultural canon. They created many of our most highly regarded works by trafficking in backward ideas around gender, race and sexual identity."

Feminaal

In a concept that Star Tribune called “clever and intriguing,” a Minneapolis Theatre Company Grumble Theatre is asking all patrons to view the play as female regardless of the gender.

Star Tribune says this is a welcome change since “The idea is to suspend the gaze of heterosexual white men, the very artists who named and defined so much of our Western cultural canon. They created many of our most highly regarded works by trafficking in backward ideas around gender, race and sexual identity.”

The play is called “Féminaal,” is described on the official Grumble Theatre website as “Féminaal presents a world that satirizes the misogyny in French New Wave Cinema and the culture at large: set in 1960’s Paris and the Present Day, this work imagines a setting where women are celebrated for their excess and debauchery and never held to a bizarrely high standard of “historical accuracy.” A genre-defying and hilarious new play, Morrison’s work combines progressive feminist ideals with raucous comedic antics to create a theatrical landscape at once familiar and utterly original.”
