The Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL) has called for the commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) to resign.
The MCCL has called for the resignation of Commissioner Jan Malcolm and change in policy after seeing Covid-19 spread in facilities such as nursing homes. Many blame the spread of Covid-19 on patients being transferred from hospitals to care facilities too early. In recent months, over 80% of Covid-19 deaths have occurred in long-term care and assisted living facilities.
“Other states have learned not to transfer infected patients into nursing homes,” said MCCL Executive Director Scott Fischbach. “This is an emergency, and Commissioner Malcolm and her team are not getting the job done. Minnesota deserves better. No category of humanity is expendable. No group of human beings should be forgotten.”
Minnesota’s Covid-19 rate in care facilities is higher than all of the states adjacent to it. And 20-30% of the facilities that the MDH had contacted did not meet infection control standards. Commissioner Malcolm has defended the transfer of patients from hospitals to care facilities, saying, “Staying in hospitals beyond the point where you need to be there is itself a risky thing,” according to Star Tribune.
“The grave dangers to residents of long-term care facilities—and the need to keep the virus out of such facilities—have been clear from the beginning. That was months ago” said Director Fischbach.
