Klobuchar says the administration’s ties to Russia puts U.S. in “very vulnerable position”
Washington, D.C. – Sen. Amy Klobuchar is calling for an investigation following the resignation of National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.
“You already had the Trump campaign chairman step aside because of contacts with Russia, and now this new report that there were multiple contacts between people in the campaign and Russian intelligence people. So, that’s why I think we have to get to the bottom of it,” Klobuchar told PBS Newshour.
Flynn was asked to resign Monday following discrepancies involving discussions with Russia, misleading administration officials.
“I inadvertently briefed the Vice President-elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian ambassador. I have sincerely apologized to the President and the Vice President, and they have accepted my apology,” Flynn wrote in his resignation letter.
“He didn’t tell the Vice President the facts, and then he didn’t remember. And that just wasn’t acceptable to me,” President Donald Trump said in a press conference today.
The President claims there was nothing illegal about what Flynn did in his phone calls with Russia, stating that he was “just doing his job.” However, legislators on both sides of the aisle are questioning the administration’s involvement with Russia.
“It just puts us in a very vulnerable position,” Klobuchar said in an interview with MPR News. “This is about the fundamental concept of our democracy.”
Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell has said it is “highly likely” that the Senate intelligence committee will investigate Flynn and his communications with Russia. However, Klobuchar doesn’t think the investigation should stop there.
“I think you need a 9/11-type commission to really look at what happened, so that you can also make recommendations so it doesn’t happen in the future,” Klobuchar said in the PBS interview.
