On May 29, a crowd of people protesting against police brutality in the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis Police found themselves face to face with a speeding semi on 35W, a major highway in the Twin Cities.
Although it has since been determined that a man who drove a tanker truck into a group of protestors who were occupying the highway did so by accident, this was not readily apparent at the time. In the confusion and intensity of that chaotic moment on a highway overpass, the group of protestors turned into a vengeful mob and dragged the driver from his semi.
Fearing that the driver was about to be killed, Miles Kipper sprung into action. Kipper has been both documenting the goings on of Minneapolis and protesting since Floyd’s death. Along with a small group of fellow protestors, Kipper kept the truck driver safe until police arrived to whisk him away. Remarkably, Kipper chose to help the truck driver even as he believed that the driver had just attempted to kill his fellow protestors.
