Democrat Governor Tim Walz expects the legislature to propose a gas tax increase.

All of the Senators will be up for reelection in 2020, and if the Democrats win it will almost guarantee the gas tax increase will pass.

While Minnesota residents narrowly escaped a large gas tax increase in 2019, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is not ready to give up.

While appearing on TPT Almanac show Governor Walz says he fully expects the business community and Republicans who helped kill the tax increase to come back to him with their own proposal to increase the tax.

This would be a stark reversal of policy since Republicans made it a priority to stop any increases to the gas tax and the tax itself is very unpopular.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka quickly poured cold water on the idea by tweeting “One thing I did not agree to behind the veil, championing a gas tax. I don’t want it and the people of MN don’t want a gas tax increase either. Let’s use the new money coming from the sales tax on auto parts to fix our roads and fill the potholes.”

All of the Senators will be up for reelection in 2020, and if the Democrats win it will almost guarantee the gas tax increase will pass.
