According to charges filed in Hennepin County, an Eden Prairie man was beaten, robbed and threatened with death by a group of people in his own apartment. Corresponding police dispatch audio stated that the man was held hostage and was left covered in bruises all over his body following the ordeal.
Mohamed Hassan Rooble, 23, is facing a felony charge related to the incident that reportedly involved several other suspects and occurred in mid-January inside an apartment on the 13700 block of Valley View Road in Eden Prairie, MN.
The Hennepin County criminal complaint states that the victim had invited friends to his apartment on Jan. 12 for a small party and that one of the friends brought several uninvited persons to the party whom the victim did not know, including Rooble.
When the victim asked Rooble and the four others to leave, Rooble became upset and punched the victim in the face. Another of the four threw the victim on the ground, another kicked the victim while he was on the ground, and then Rooble pulled out a firearm and struck the victim in the head with it. Meanwhile, another person retrieved a knife from the kitchen and told the group that they should kill the victim, the complaint said.
The complaint states that Rooble subsequently took the victim’s wallet, computer, cell phone and a tablet. Police were able to corroborate the victim’s report of the theft through surveillance footage that showed Rooble removing a computer monitor and a suitcase from the victim’s apartment.
The specific timeline is not made clear in the criminal complaint, and the Eden Prairie Police Department declined to provide further details following an inquiry about the incident, but recorded police dispatch audio indicates that police were not dispatched to respond to the incident until Jan. 14, two days later.
The recorded dispatch audio from just before 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 14 indicates that the victim had shown up at his workplace, less than half-a-mile down the road from the apartment building on Valley View Road, and told the manager that he had been held hostage and beaten and that one of the suspects was still at his apartment. The audio indicates that the manager of the business made the call to police to report the incident, but neither the audio nor the complaint makes clear how the victim escaped the apartment or how long he’d reportedly been held hostage.
All five suspects were subsequently arrested according to a Jan. 14 Eden Prairie police arrest report, but only Rooble and three of the four others named in the complaint were subsequently charged related to the incident. Jamal Sulub Abdi, 37, Ahmed Dahir Sirad, 31, and Warda Abdikarim Osman, a 22-year-old female, were each charged on Jan. 14 with one count of fifth-degree assault, but the charges in each of those three cases were dismissed by the prosecuting attorney several days later.
Rooble, who lists several different addresses on jail and court records, was charged with one count of felony first-degree burglary of an occupied dwelling and made his first court appearance on Feb. 6. The record shows that he was granted a public defender.
If convicted, the criminal complaint states that Rooble could face up to 20 years in prison. However, the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Grid calls for a sentence much lower than that at Rooble’s presumed level of Minnesota criminal history score based on prior convictions.
Court records show that Rooble has a 2018 conviction in Lyon County (Marshall, MN) for felony first-degree criminal damage to property and misdemeanor fifth-degree assault. Rooble was granted stays-of-imposition on both counts in the case by Judge Michelle A. Dietrich. Rooble was instead sentenced to serve 60 days in local jail and was placed on probation for a term of five years on the felony conviction. Two other charges of felony first-degree burglary of an occupied dwelling and trespassing were dismissed in the case.
The prior felony conviction in that case still leaves Rooble with a low criminal history score for sentencing purposes if convicted in the Eden Prairie case.
Rooble remains in custody in Hennepin County Jail on $10,000 bail with conditions or $30,000 without conditions. Rooble is scheduled to make his next court appearance in the case on March 3. As a result of the new Hennepin County charge, a probation violation was triggered for the Lyon County case and a warrant was issued for his arrest in that county and remains active.
