Blue Cross Blue Shield to Include Type 2 Diabetes Program by Omada Health in 2020 Plans

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota has engaged in a partnership with Omada Health that will include a Type 2 Diabetes Digital Care Program in their commercial plans beginning in 2020.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota has announced that a Type 2 Diabetes Digital Care Program will now be covered under their commercial plans. Employers can expect this to launch in January of 2020. 

Blue Cross Blue Shield has been working with a company called Omada Health since 2013. Omada is a digital care program that works though employers and healthcare providers to deliver aid to type individuals with type 2 diabetes and hypertension in addition to depression and anxiety. The company has over 250,000 participants enrolled in their wide array of programs. 

“Omada’s program for type 2 Diabetes provides an experience unlike anything else offered in healthcare today,” said president and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, Dr. Craig Samitt. He added that he is pleased that his many of his members “can now have access to a personalized program with professional coaching from Certified Diabetes Educators wherever and whenever they need it.”

Blue Cross Blue Shield rolled out Omada Health’s prediabetes program in 2015 that “continues to help thousands of members assess their risk for diabetes, take action, and reduce the chances of progressing to the full disease,” said Omada Health co-founder and CEO Sean Duffy. 

Just this August, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota announced their plan to cover insulin costs for a $0 co-pay, delivering relief to many who suffer from diabetes and are insured by Blue Cross Blue Shield. Duffy points out that “Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota has a strong record of providing support to people living with type 2 diabetes.”
