Planned Parenthood has continued to provide abortions in Minnesota, even after Governor Tim Walz placed a ban on elective procedures amidst the COVID-19 epidemic.
Walz, last week, ordered the cancelation of all non-essential dental and surgical procedures via Executive Order 20-09. This ban is intended to free up medical workers and supplies to fight coronavirus. Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL), a pro-life group, says Planned Parenthood is violating this order as it continues to perform abortions in the state. The Minnesota House Republicans have also sent a letter to the Governor urging him to specifically include abortion in his order.
“Planned Parenthood and other abortion facilities continue to use much-needed medical resources for their own elective abortions rather than to help meet the needs of those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic,” MCCL Executive Director Scott Fischbach said in a recent press release.
“Abortion centers should follow the same rules as everyone else. We are all in this together,” he added.

The release also notes that “Emergency Executive Order 20-09 makes no exception for abortion,” and that because “the vast majority of abortions” are not performed to rectify a life threatening condition, abortive services should be rendered temporarily unavailable by this order.
The Minnesota House Republicans agree with the MCCL. “Most abortions clearly fall under the category of ‘elective’ or ‘non-essential’ as those terms are described in the executive order,” the conservative legislators wrote in an open letter to Walz.
“For the safety and health of the public during this time of ongoing crisis, we ask that you
ensure that the governor’s policy applies to the practice of abortion no less than to other elective procedures,” the letter reads.
Pro-abortion groups don’t abide by this narrative, however. UnRestrict Minnesota called out “anti-abortion rights groups” in a tweet, Wednesday. “No one should be politicizing #COVID19 in order to push their anti-abortion agenda. Abortion is essential health care, and people need access to care,” the group claimed.

Ohio, Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and Maryland have all placed a temporary ban on abortions in order to conserve valuable medical supplies for hospitals treating coronavirus patients, according to MCCL.
