An anti-Trump picture was discovered Tuesday in a display case of Ordean-East Middle School in Duluth.  KJBR6 reported the picture, depicting President-Elect Donald Trump with “URDE4DM4N” (translation “You’re a dead man”) and “Have You Seen This Man?”  It was removed by school administration staff and is being investigated.  The school released a statement saying, “Sadly, (it’s) another example of the increase in inappropriate and unacceptable behavior related to the election that we’re working to address in our schools.”  Alpha News contacted Ordean-East school administration but calls were not returned.

Other negative election-related incidents in Duluth schools have included racial slurs written on a bathroom wall at Denfeld High School last week and student-reported increased cyberbullying.

Some Duluth students have looked for ways to combat division in their schools.  One student, Johanna Unden, posted the following tweet with a video showing hundreds of post-it notes plastered all over Denfeld High School’s walls and surfaces, each with an affirming message of love, unity and hope.

At the Nov. 15 school board meeting, Duluth Schools Superintendent Bill Gronseth addressed the election-result issues the district schools have reported, stating:

“I want to be clear that intolerant language and images and behavior are unacceptable in our schools and will result in serious disciplinary measures for those involved. At a time when our country is so divided, we have to be vigilant, especially as educators, to work together as a community, regardless of our political affiliations, to do our best to assure that every student feels safe in our schools (and) that every student feels welcome and supported in our schools….

In the coming days and weeks, the Duluth schools will work to reaffirm our dedication to creating safe and welcoming environments where all feel valued and respected. We’ll be sharing additional resources with our staff (and) we’ll be providing learning opportunities for our students.” (Duluth News Tribune)
