Group Combats “Pro-Choice Catholics” Ad With Billboard Campaign

St. Paul, MN – On Tuesday the Catholic Defense League of Minnesota (CDLMN) announced it added a billboard advertisement in response to a “pro-choice Catholics” advertisement posted in the Star Tribune earlier in September.

Prior to putting up the billboard, CDLMN placed their own advertisement in the Star Tribune, refuting the advertisement by “Catholics for Choice” (CFC), which claimed that “public funding of abortion is a Catholic social justice value.”

As Alpha News previously reported, the CFC advertisement primarily consisted of a picture of a woman alongside her pro-choice pledge. It is part of the group’s new multi-year campaign called In Good Faith.

The “In Good Faith” campaign believes restrictions on abortions is not a Catholic value, stating, “Women who are dependent on Medicaid, employees of the federal and state governments, military members, and millions of others who are dependent on public funding simply don’t get the same kind of care as women with money. That is not Catholic.”

The CDLMN is fighting this belief.  “Our campaign seeks to set the record straight on what is authentic Catholic teaching on abortion,” said Val Baertlein, spokesperson for CDLMN. “There is absolutely no basis for associating the word ‘Catholic’ with ‘abortion’ as a ‘social justice value.’ We can’t allow dissidents to misinform Catholics on this important issue, especially during an election season.”

Alpha News contacted the Archdiocese of St. Paul and did not yet receive a response.

The East-facing digital billboard is located on Interstate 694 at Lexington Avenue in Shoreview, Minnesota. The advertisement is estimated to receive nearly 28,000 views per day. The ad is scheduled to run through the month of October.
