Conservative? We’ll Cover The Protestors, Not Your Event

This week's media bias contest winner is a classic.

Congratulations to an Alpha News reader who has the stomach to watch local television. He’s a stronger man than I am. What’s his secret to not losing brain cells while doing so?

This week’s winning submission is WCCO’s “coverage” of Ben Shapiro’s appearance at the University of Minnesota. Grossly inflating the number of “protestors,” their coverage claimed 40 people got mad and stamped their tiny feet at the exercise of the First Amendment.

I say this is WCCO’s coverage but in reality they simply ran an Associated Press story. The AP’s bias is legendary. Local media’s laziness, like their national counterparts, is also legendary. The station couldn’t be bothered to send a crew to report on the event and to get both sides of the story.

Of course, what would have been ideal is if WCCO had reported on how many people attended the speech, what Shapiro actually said and mentioned the fact that despite being quarantined to the Saint Paul campus with over 100 police officers, the event sold out same day it was announced. There was a long wait list to get in.

Minnesota media frequently doesn’t report the truth. Consumers cannot rely automatically on a story’s honesty. This is too bad. They can rely, in confidence, that any story involving the slightest controversy will lean left. To expect otherwise is to ignore reality.

Congrats to this week’s winner, your $50 gift card is on the way. Thanks to everyone else who submitted. Keep them coming: another winner will be announced next Friday.
